They seem to be going: `Look, we`re girls first. but a lot of them seem to be doing the old t-and-a thing when it`s not necessary. not everybody now, and I couldn`t even name names. ''Unfortunately, a lot of the girls who are out there playing rock `n` They have a mental image from the 1800s or something. ''So I don`t want people telling me what to do, like `Joan, you gotta tone down` or `You gotta get more feminine looking.` C`mon.

''It`s not all that I know how to do, but at this point in my life I wouldn`t want to start trying to figure out something else to do. ''I`m really stubborn in the way I feel about my music because that`s all I have,'' continues Jett. To me, a lot of this stuff comes across as, `Okay, let`s sell some records for this band.` A lot of these bands, they`ve got the pose, they`ve got the clothes, but they don`t have the inside passion for the music. More and more, I see a lot of these bands that sound nothing like rock `n` roll to me-and now I know what people are talking about when they say rock `n` roll is partly attitude.

`Yeah, to a certain extent.` But, really, you know, rock `n` roll is something you have to feel, something you have to believe. ''People have said to me so many times, `Don`t you think rock `n` roll is an attitude?` And I never really thought about it that much. Everyone`s going under the guise of rock `n` roll. These new bands are coming along, and they fit the formula, and they get on the radio. Everything just goes along, and everybody conforms. I`m talking about safe in terms of nobody ever questioning anything. I don`t mean things should be unsafe to the point where everybody is in danger of dying. ''Everything`s becoming very corporate and very safe. These days, (music industry) people immediately think about radio play and MTV play, and if they don`t think a band fits the mold, that band doesn`t get a shot. ''I`ll tell you,'' she says, ''sometimes we as a band know there are other bands out there, other three-chord rock `n` roll bands. But she is more than willing to let loose with a few opinions on the state of rock today. Jett declines to comment on the new crop of women performers, saying she has been too busy to hear much of their work. At a time when record companies seem to be scrambling to sign up female pop performers-many of whom are more or less in the ''sensitive'' singer-songwriter mold-Jett is a veteran who has hit the top of the chart with loud, basic, from-the-gut rock `n` roll. That Jett`s return to the Top 10 should come at this particular moment is not without a hint of irony. It wasn`t a desperation move, like, `Ohmigod, we`ve gotta go out and get fresh blood.` I think Kenny just wanted to see what would happen.'' But Kenny thought it would be a good idea if I hooked up with a couple people who had recent successes, just to see if anything would come out of it, see if we could get some sort of magic happening. ''I wouldn`t mind writing with just Kenny and Ricky (Byrd), our guitar player, for the rest of my life. ''No, it`s something that Kenny Laguna came up with,'' says Jett. Roll, she did moderate her approach a bit-even trying a rap vocal-on her 1986 LP ''Good Music.'' But the fact that Child and Ric Browde were added to Jett`s usual songwriting team for the current album did not, Jett says, indicate any uncertainty about direction or the usual team`s abilities. While Jett has remained constant in her dedication to basic rock `n` Then find that big, catchy chorus that`s simple enough but still means something to people.'' I said I wanted to write a song like `Touch Me` that`s got the guitar riff the kids will remember, something they`ll walk around and hum. I think a lot of our songs have that sort of glitterish sound, but this was definitely a conscious effort. ''There was a song on our `Bad Reputation` album called `Do You Wanna Touch Me` that was a hit,'' says Jett, ''and I`ve always wanted to write another song that had that style. She wrote the song with Desmond Child, one of two outside songwriters brought in for the current album by Jett and her longtime producer-manager-collaborator Kenny Laguna.
